How Crumb works

Crumb reads a label, dish, menu, or barcode and returns a risk read — Known safe, Likely safe, Unclear, or Likely unsafe — with the reason and what still needs human verification.

01 · Ruleset first

A deterministic ingredient ruleset runs first and outrules the AI. It knows gluten sources such as wheat, barley, rye, and malt; ambiguous items such as oats and soy sauce; and cross-contact patterns such as shared fryers and gluten-free food from gluten kitchens.

02 · Vision reads

A vision/language model reads the actual label or plate: ingredients, allergen declarations, barcodes resolved against Open Food Facts, and multi-component plates graded component by component.

03 · Risk, not clearance

Crumb frames every answer as risk assessment, never clearance. A “gluten free” claim on a normally glutenous food cannot outrank a cross-contact question. Crumb is not a medical device.

Australian & New Zealand labelling

Crumb’s AU/NZ engine behavior is live as of this week and encodes FSANZ Standard 1.2.7 distinctly from US/EU thresholds:

  • “Gluten free” means no detectable gluten, with no oats or malted gluten cereals. Crumb applies that stricter AU/NZ reading.
  • “Low gluten” (up to 200 ppm) never passes for coeliacs; it is graded as not safe.
  • Oats are flagged everywhere, and oats can never be labelled gluten free in Australia and New Zealand.
  • May-contain / precautionary allergen labelling is voluntary. Its presence is a cross-contact signal; its absence proves nothing.
  • PEAL bold allergen declarations are trusted for presence only. A missing bold declaration does not clear cross-contact.

Your privacy

  • Consent gate: Crumb processes nothing about your health until you reply I AGREE.
  • Phone numbers are never stored raw — only a one-way hash.
  • Uploaded photos have EXIF location/camera metadata stripped on receipt.
  • Data lives in private EU (Frankfurt) storage.
  • WhatsApp messages transit Meta’s servers before reaching Crumb; that is inherent to WhatsApp.
  • /export returns what Crumb holds; /delete erases the record and stored media.
  • No advertising use and no data sales.
